Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Dawson Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Zilker Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Dawson Elementary School has a regular student population of 262 with a 9.1 students/teacher ratio while Zilker Elementary School has 471 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.8 students/teacher ratio.
Dawson Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 54 in student achievement, 74 in school progress and 65 in closing performance gaps. It scored 71 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Zilker Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 96 in closing performance gaps and 94 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Zilker Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and with 25% student progress. Dawson Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Dawson Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 69.85% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (16.41%), African Americans (9.54%), Asians (2.29%) and Two or More Races (1.91%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Zilker Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 62.63% of student population, followed by Hispanics (24.20%), Two or More Races (6.79%), African Americans (2.97%), Asians (2.97%) and Native Americans (0.21%).
Based on household incomes, Dawson Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 69.85% compared to 21.66% at Zilker Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Dawson Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 25.57% of its student population compared to 4.25% at Zilker Elementary School.
In addition, Dawson Elementary School has 45.42% bilingual students, 5.34% are in the gifted and talented program, while 25.19% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Zilker Elementary School with 24.63% bilingual students, 7.43% gifted and talented students and 9.55% students in the special education program.
28 teachers employed at Dawson Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years. The 34 teachers at Zilker Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Dawson Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Zilker Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Dawson Elementary School there are 25 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
