Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Cypresswood Elementary School, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, with Smith Elementary School, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Cypresswood Elementary School has a regular student population of 790 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio while Smith Elementary School has 582 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.8 students/teacher ratio.
Cypresswood Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 56 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 66 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Smith Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 50 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Cypresswood Elementary School and Smith Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Cypresswood Elementary School. They make up for 51.77% of student population, followed by African Americans (38.10%), Whites or Caucasians (3.67%), Two or More Races (2.66%) and Asians (1.90%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Smith Elementary School, Hispanics make up 71.31% of student population, followed by African Americans (24.40%), Two or More Races (2.58%), Whites or Caucasians (1.55%) and Native Americans (0.17%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Cypresswood Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 86.71% compared to 84.71% at Smith Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cypresswood Elementary School has 253 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 32.03% of student population. Smith Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 355 or about 61.00% of student population.
Cypresswood Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 31.52%, gifted and talented students, 4.18%, while 8.61% are in the special education program. Smith Elementary School bilingual students comprise 60.82%, gifted and talented students, 1.37%, and 10.14% are in the special education program.
44 teachers employed at Cypresswood Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 4.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.2 years. The 30 teachers at Smith Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Cypresswood Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, no teacher serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
