Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Cook Jr Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with West University Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Cook Jr Elementary School has a regular student population of 509 with a 14.9 students/teacher ratio while West University Elementary School has 1,124 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.7 students/teacher ratio.
Cook Jr Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 69 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, West University Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 96 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 92 in closing performance gaps and 95 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Cook Jr Elementary School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. West University Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Cook Jr Elementary School. They make up for 52.26% of student population, followed by Hispanics (44.40%), Whites or Caucasians (1.77%), Two or More Races (0.79%), Native Americans (0.39%) and Asians (0.20%).
At West University Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 61.83% of student population, followed by Asians (17.17%), Hispanics (13.08%), Two or More Races (5.87%), African Americans (1.60%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
Based on household incomes, Cook Jr Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 98.23% compared to 6.58% at West University Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cook Jr Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 25.15% of its student population compared to 4.00% at West University Elementary School.
Additionally, Cook Jr Elementary School has 26.13% bilingual students, 0.59% are in the gifted and talented program, while 6.09% are in the special education program. West University Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 3.91% of student population while 8.10% are in the special education program. West University Elementary School bested Cook Jr Elementary School in one area, with nearly 53.20% of its student population in the gifted and talented program.
34 teachers employed at Cook Jr Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.3 years. The 67 teachers at West University Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 9.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Cook Jr Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. West University Elementary School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Cook Jr Elementary School there are 30 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
