Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Colony Meadows Elementary School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Barrington Place Elementary School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Colony Meadows Elementary School has a regular student population of 611 with a 14.7 students/teacher ratio while Barrington Place Elementary School has 482 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.8 students/teacher ratio.
Colony Meadows Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 96 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Barrington Place Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 85 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 85 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only two distinction designations or awards for performance. For Colony Meadows Elementary School these are in post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps while Barrington Place Elementary School secured in Mathematics and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Colony Meadows Elementary School. They make up for 48.12% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (27.99%), Hispanics (13.26%), Two or More Races (6.06%), African Americans (4.09%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
The student population at Barrington Place Elementary School is also predominantly by Asians at 40.66%, followed by Hispanics (22.20%), African Americans (15.56%), Whites or Caucasians (15.15%), Two or More Races (4.56%) and Native Americans (1.66%).
Based on household incomes, the Colony Meadows Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 18.66% compared to 61.41% at Barrington Place Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Colony Meadows Elementary School has 132 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 21.60% of student population. Barrington Place Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 200 or about 41.49% of student population.
Colony Meadows Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 20.62%, gifted and talented students, 9.98%, while 8.67% are in the special education program. Barrington Place Elementary School bilingual students comprise 41.08%, gifted and talented students, 2.28%, and 11.20% are in the special education program.
41 teachers employed at Colony Meadows Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.7 years. The 37 teachers at Barrington Place Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years.
Of its teaching staff, Colony Meadows Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Barrington Place Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Colony Meadows Elementary School there are 37 female teachers and four male teachers.
