Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Cinco Ranch Junior High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Katy Junior High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Cinco Ranch Junior High School’s regular student population is 1,423 with a 16 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Katy Junior High School is 1,099 students and a 14.1 students/teacher ratio.
Cinco Ranch Junior High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 96 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Katy Junior High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 85 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 81 in closing performance gaps and 84 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Cinco Ranch Junior High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Katy Junior High School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Science, Social Studies and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Cinco Ranch Junior High School. They make up for 35.21% of student population, followed by Hispanics (29.30%), Asians (23.40%), African Americans (8.50%), Two or More Races (3.37%) and Native Americans (0.14%).
The student population at Katy Junior High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 47.13%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (36.31%), African Americans (9.83%), Two or More Races (4.19%), Asians (2.00%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
Based on household incomes, the Cinco Ranch Junior High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 28.74% compared to 46.50% at Katy Junior High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cinco Ranch Junior High School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 15.46% of its student population compared to 19.84% at Katy Junior High School.
Cinco Ranch Junior High School’s bilingual students comprise 14.90%, gifted and talented students, 12.58%, while 13.07% are in the special education program. Katy Junior High School bilingual students comprise 18.93%, gifted and talented students, 5.00%, and 19.65% are in the special education program.
Cinco Ranch Junior High School's 88 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.7 years. Teachers at Katy Junior High School, numbering 77 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Cinco Ranch Junior High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 14 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 30 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Katy Junior High School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 39 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Cinco Ranch Junior High School there are 69 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 11 special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
At Katy Junior High School there are 53 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
