Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Christie Elementary School, which is a part of FRISCO ISD, with Vaughn Elementary School, which is a part of FRISCO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Christie Elementary School has a regular student population of 390 with a 9.7 students/teacher ratio while Vaughn Elementary School has 700 students and a student-teacher ratio of 20.4 students/teacher ratio.
Christie Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 89 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for with 25% student progress, Christie Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions. Vaughn Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Christie Elementary School. They make up for 52.82% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.26%), African Americans (12.56%), Asians (9.23%), Two or More Races (4.87%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
The student population at Vaughn Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 37.29%, followed by Asians (34.14%), African Americans (11.29%), Hispanics (10.29%), Two or More Races (6.29%) and Native Americans (0.43%).
Based on household incomes, Christie Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 42.31% compared to 8.29% at Vaughn Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Christie Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 47.69% of its student population compared to 7.29% at Vaughn Elementary School.
In addition, Christie Elementary School has 48.72% bilingual students, 5.64% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.90% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Vaughn Elementary School with 6.57% bilingual students, 6.86% gifted and talented students and 12.00% students in the special education program.
40 teachers employed at Christie Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.2 years. The 34 teachers at Vaughn Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years.
