Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Carrillo Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Garden Villas Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Carrillo Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Garden Villas Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Carrillo Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 94.47% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (3.42%), African Americans (1.05%), Asians (0.79%) and Two or More Races (0.26%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Garden Villas Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.27% of student population, followed by African Americans (24.11%), Whites or Caucasians (2.15%), Native Americans (0.24%) and Two or More Races (0.24%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Carrillo Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 87.89% compared to 89.50% at Garden Villas Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Carrillo Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 53.16% of its student population compared to 36.28% at Garden Villas Elementary School.
Carrillo Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 45.53%, gifted and talented students, 19.74%, while 9.21% are in the special education program. Garden Villas Elementary School bilingual students comprise 35.08%, gifted and talented students, 3.58%, and 5.97% are in the special education program.
