Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Budewig Intermediate, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Albright Middle School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Budewig Intermediate’s regular student population is 1,137 with a 12.6 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Albright Middle School is 1,118 students and a 13.2 students/teacher ratio.
Budewig Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 64 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Albright Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 81 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 90 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Budewig Intermediate’s two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Albright Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Budewig Intermediate. They make up for 46.09% of student population, followed by Hispanics (39.14%), Asians (8.00%), Whites or Caucasians (4.75%), Native Americans (1.32%) and Two or More Races (0.53%).
The student population at Albright Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 41.95%, followed by African Americans (36.76%), Asians (15.38%), Whites or Caucasians (4.11%), Native Americans (0.98%) and Two or More Races (0.72%).
Based on household incomes, Budewig Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 83.64% compared to 77.37% at Albright Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Budewig Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 41.60% of its student population compared to 25.49% at Albright Middle School.
In addition, Budewig Intermediate has 41.42% bilingual students, 4.49% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.04% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Albright Middle School with 25.49% bilingual students, 11.36% gifted and talented students and 8.50% students in the special education program.
Budewig Intermediate's 90 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years. Teachers at Albright Middle School, numbering 84 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 9.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Budewig Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 24 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 27 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 26 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Albright Middle School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 23 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Budewig Intermediate there are 69 female teachers and 20 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Albright Middle School there are 68 female teachers and 16 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
