Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Brookside Intermediate, which is a part of CLEAR CREEK ISD, with Westbrook Intermediate, which is a part of CLEAR CREEK ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Brookside Intermediate’s regular student population is 945 with a 14.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Westbrook Intermediate is 1,156 students and a 17.1 students/teacher ratio.
Brookside Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 83 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 83 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Westbrook Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 87 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Westbrook Intermediate's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Brookside Intermediate has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Brookside Intermediate. They make up for 39.05% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (36.40%), Asians (10.48%), African Americans (9.52%), Two or More Races (4.44%) and Native Americans (0.11%).
The student population at Westbrook Intermediate is also predominantly by Hispanics at 31.57%, followed by Asians (27.42%), Whites or Caucasians (27.16%), African Americans (8.74%), Two or More Races (4.67%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
Based on household incomes, Brookside Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 43.17% compared to 37.28% at Westbrook Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Brookside Intermediate has 75 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 7.94% of student population. Westbrook Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 137 or about 11.85% of student population.
In addition, Brookside Intermediate has 6.46% bilingual students, 3.81% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.61% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Westbrook Intermediate with 11.33% bilingual students, 46.28% gifted and talented students and 9.60% students in the special education program.
Brookside Intermediate's 63 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years. Teachers at Westbrook Intermediate, numbering 67 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Brookside Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Westbrook Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 17 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Brookside Intermediate there are 43 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 15 special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
At Westbrook Intermediate there are 47 female teachers and 20 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
