Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Brookside Intermediate, which is a part of CLEAR CREEK ISD, with Space Center Intermediate, which is a part of CLEAR CREEK ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Brookside Intermediate’s regular student population is 945 with a 14.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Space Center Intermediate is 884 students and a 13.9 students/teacher ratio.
Brookside Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 83 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 83 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Space Center Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 78 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Brookside Intermediate and Space Center Intermediate are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Brookside Intermediate. They make up for 39.05% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (36.40%), Asians (10.48%), African Americans (9.52%), Two or More Races (4.44%) and Native Americans (0.11%).
The student population at Space Center Intermediate is also predominantly by Hispanics at 44.12%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.16%), African Americans (11.09%), Asians (6.67%) and Two or More Races (3.96%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Brookside Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 43.17% compared to 50.00% at Space Center Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Brookside Intermediate has 75 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 7.94% of student population. Space Center Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 206 or about 23.30% of student population.
Brookside Intermediate’s bilingual students comprise 6.46%, gifted and talented students, 3.81%, while 16.61% are in the special education program. Space Center Intermediate bilingual students comprise 20.70%, gifted and talented students, 2.94%, and 17.31% are in the special education program.
Brookside Intermediate's 63 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years. Teachers at Space Center Intermediate, numbering 63 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Brookside Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Space Center Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 15 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 20 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Brookside Intermediate there are 43 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 15 special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
At Space Center Intermediate there are 41 female teachers and 21 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
