Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Briargrove Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sharpstown International School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Briargrove Elementary School has a regular student population of 812 with a 18.4 students/teacher ratio while Sharpstown International School has 1,304 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.1 students/teacher ratio.
Briargrove Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 80 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sharpstown International School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 89 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 86 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only two distinction designations or awards for performance. For Briargrove Elementary School these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress while Sharpstown International School secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Briargrove Elementary School. They make up for 33.74% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (24.01%), African Americans (20.20%), Asians (16.50%), Two or More Races (5.42%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
At Sharpstown International School, Hispanics make up 82.52% of student population, followed by Asians (8.51%), African Americans (6.44%), Whites or Caucasians (1.99%), Native Americans (0.23%) and Two or More Races (0.23%).
Based on household incomes, the Briargrove Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 51.23% compared to 97.70% at Sharpstown International School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Briargrove Elementary School has 241 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 29.68% of student population. Sharpstown International School has significantly more ELLs at 359 or about 27.53% of student population.
In addition, Briargrove Elementary School has 27.83% bilingual students, 6.40% are in the gifted and talented program, while 6.53% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sharpstown International School with 26.99% bilingual students, 24.77% gifted and talented students and 6.44% students in the special education program.
44 teachers employed at Briargrove Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years. The 76 teachers at Sharpstown International School have been serving the school for an average of 8.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Briargrove Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Sharpstown International School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Briargrove Elementary School there are 38 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Sharpstown International School there are 53 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
