Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Briargrove Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Rucker Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Briargrove Elementary School has a regular student population of 812 with a 18.4 students/teacher ratio while Rucker Elementary School has 371 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.7 students/teacher ratio.
Briargrove Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 80 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Rucker Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only two distinction designations or awards for performance. For Briargrove Elementary School these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress while Rucker Elementary School secured in Science and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Briargrove Elementary School. They make up for 33.74% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (24.01%), African Americans (20.20%), Asians (16.50%), Two or More Races (5.42%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
At Rucker Elementary School, Hispanics make up 94.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.96%) and Whites or Caucasians (2.70%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Briargrove Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 51.23% compared to 95.96% at Rucker Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Briargrove Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 29.68% of its student population compared to 50.40% at Rucker Elementary School.
Briargrove Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 27.83%, gifted and talented students, 6.40%, while 6.53% are in the special education program. Rucker Elementary School bilingual students comprise 54.99%, gifted and talented students, 3.23%, and 13.48% are in the special education program.
44 teachers employed at Briargrove Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years. The 27 teachers at Rucker Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Briargrove Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Rucker Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Briargrove Elementary School there are 38 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
