Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Briargrove Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Almeda Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Briargrove Elementary School has a regular student population of 812 with a 18.4 students/teacher ratio while Almeda Elementary School has 802 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.1 students/teacher ratio.
Briargrove Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 80 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Almeda Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 71 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Briargrove Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress. Almeda Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Briargrove Elementary School. They make up for 33.74% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (24.01%), African Americans (20.20%), Asians (16.50%), Two or More Races (5.42%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
At Almeda Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.82% of student population, followed by African Americans (24.31%), Whites or Caucasians (1.37%), Asians (0.25%), Native Americans (0.12%) and Two or More Races (0.12%).
Based on household incomes, the Briargrove Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 51.23% compared to 94.89% at Almeda Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Briargrove Elementary School has 241 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 29.68% of student population. Almeda Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 399 or about 49.75% of student population.
Briargrove Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 27.83%, gifted and talented students, 6.40%, while 6.53% are in the special education program. Almeda Elementary School bilingual students comprise 49.25%, gifted and talented students, 3.37%, and 4.86% are in the special education program.
