Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Brauchle Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, with Helotes Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Brauchle Elementary School has a regular student population of 451 with a 12.9 students/teacher ratio while Helotes Elementary School has 351 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.5 students/teacher ratio.
Brauchle Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Helotes Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 95 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Brauchle Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth. Helotes Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Brauchle Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 77.61% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (13.75%), Two or More Races (4.66%), African Americans (3.10%) and Asians (0.89%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Helotes Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 50.71%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (41.60%), Two or More Races (4.56%), Asians (1.99%) and African Americans (1.14%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Brauchle Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 64.97% compared to 17.38% at Helotes Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Brauchle Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 1.55% of its student population compared to 1.42% at Helotes Elementary School.
Brauchle Elementary School 19.73% are in the special education program, 3.77% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 0.44% students. Helotes Elementary School has no bilingual student, while 17.38% are in the special education program, and 12.54% are in the gifted and talented program students.
