Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Bonnie Brae, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, with Woodway Elementary School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Bonnie Brae has a regular student population of 376 with a 13.2 students/teacher ratio while Woodway Elementary School has 482 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18 students/teacher ratio.
Bonnie Brae not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 60 in student achievement, 69 in school progress and 70 in closing performance gaps. It scored 69 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Woodway Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 56 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Bonnie Brae and Woodway Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Bonnie Brae is Hispanics who make up nearly 85.11% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (6.65%), African Americans (3.19%), Two or More Races (2.66%) and Asians (2.39%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Woodway Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 55.81% of student population, followed by African Americans (34.23%), Whites or Caucasians (4.77%), Two or More Races (4.36%) and Asians (0.83%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Bonnie Brae’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 88.56% compared to 93.57% at Woodway Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bonnie Brae has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 53.99% of its student population compared to 32.99% at Woodway Elementary School.
Bonnie Brae’s bilingual students comprise 50.80%, gifted and talented students, 4.26%, while 19.41% are in the special education program. Woodway Elementary School bilingual students comprise 31.54%, gifted and talented students, 2.90%, and 12.66% are in the special education program.
28 teachers employed at Bonnie Brae have been teaching in the school for an average of about 12 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.3 years. The 26 teachers at Woodway Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.8 years.
