Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Blackshear Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Sanchez Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Blackshear Elementary School has a regular student population of 287 with a 12.3 students/teacher ratio while Sanchez Elementary School has 406 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.3 students/teacher ratio.
Blackshear Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 74 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sanchez Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 59 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 84 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. This is in with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Blackshear Elementary School. They make up for 43.55% of student population, followed by African Americans (26.13%), Whites or Caucasians (21.60%), Two or More Races (7.32%) and Asians (1.39%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Sanchez Elementary School, Hispanics make up 89.41% of student population, followed by Asians (4.68%), Whites or Caucasians (3.69%), African Americans (1.23%) and Two or More Races (0.99%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Blackshear Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 56.45% compared to 81.77% at Sanchez Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Blackshear Elementary School has 32 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.15% of student population. Sanchez Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 273 or about 67.24% of student population.
Blackshear Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 10.80%, gifted and talented students, 13.94%, while 13.59% are in the special education program. Sanchez Elementary School bilingual students comprise 79.31%, gifted and talented students, 3.45%, and 7.39% are in the special education program.
23 teachers employed at Blackshear Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.1 years. The 30 teachers at Sanchez Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Blackshear Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Sanchez Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Blackshear Elementary School there are 22 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and two more working as school support staff.
