Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Beverly Hills Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Marshall Kendrick Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Beverly Hills Intermediate’s regular student population is 887 with a 11.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Marshall Kendrick Middle School is 727 students and a 12.9 students/teacher ratio.
Beverly Hills Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 94 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Marshall Kendrick Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Beverly Hills Intermediate's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Marshall Kendrick Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Beverly Hills Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 67.08% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.15%), Asians (9.36%), Whites or Caucasians (4.17%) and Two or More Races (1.13%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Marshall Kendrick Middle School, Hispanics make up 85.42% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.29%), Whites or Caucasians (6.05%), Two or More Races (0.55%), Asians (0.41%) and Native Americans (0.14%).
Based on household incomes, the Beverly Hills Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 73.96% compared to 85.83% at Marshall Kendrick Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Beverly Hills Intermediate has 201 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 22.66% of student population. Marshall Kendrick Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 286 or about 39.34% of student population.
In addition, Beverly Hills Intermediate has 19.28% bilingual students, 7.10% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.53% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Marshall Kendrick Middle School with 40.44% bilingual students, 8.53% gifted and talented students and 14.31% students in the special education program.
Beverly Hills Intermediate's 77 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.3 years. Teachers at Marshall Kendrick Middle School, numbering 56 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Beverly Hills Intermediate has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 13 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 24 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Marshall Kendrick Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Beverly Hills Intermediate there are 52 female teachers and 25 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Marshall Kendrick Middle School there are 45 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 17 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
