As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. When we compared Austin High School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Travis Early College High School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Austin High School’s regular student population is 2,379 with a student-teacher ratio of 18 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Travis Early College High School is 1,138 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.6 students/teacher ratio.
Austin High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Travis Early College High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 78 in student achievement, 87 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 83 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Austin High School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Travis Early College High School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Austin High School. They make up for 53.89% of student population, followed by Hispanics (35.48%), Two or More Races (4.71%), African Americans (3.32%), Asians (2.31%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
At Travis Early College High School, Hispanics make up 82.60% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.49%), Whites or Caucasians (5.01%), Asians (1.93%), Two or More Races (0.62%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
Based on household incomes, the Austin High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 22.19% compared to 84.18% at Travis Early College High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Austin High School has 177 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 7.44% of student population. Travis Early College High School has significantly more ELLs at 513 or about 45.08% of student population.
Austin High School’s bilingual students comprise 7.02%, gifted and talented students, 17.23%, while 10.84% are in the special education program. Travis Early College High School bilingual students comprise 44.29%, gifted and talented students, 7.91%, and 17.31% are in the special education program.
Austin High School's 132 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11 years. Travis Early College High School's 83 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Austin High School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 17 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 42 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 22 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 39 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Travis Early College High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 31 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Austin High School employs 67 female teachers and 65 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 17 special education teachers are being assisted by 16 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs seven staff members in the school administration department and 11 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Travis Early College High School employs 54 female teachers and 29 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 19 special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
