When we compared Austin High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Westbury High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Austin High School’s regular student population is 1,557 with a student-teacher ratio of 16.6 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Westbury High School is 2,345 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.5 students/teacher ratio.
Austin High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 82 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 80 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Westbury High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 71 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Westbury High School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and 25% closing performance gaps. Austin High School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Austin High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 90.24% of student population, followed by African Americans (8.67%), Whites or Caucasians (0.64%), Two or More Races (0.19%), Asians (0.06%) and Native Americans (0.06%).
At Westbury High School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 65.03% of student population, followed by African Americans (31.17%), Whites or Caucasians (1.88%), Asians (1.15%), Two or More Races (0.68%) and Native Americans (0.04%).
Based on household incomes, Austin High School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 96.40% compared to 92.24% at Westbury High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Austin High School has 558 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 35.84% of student population. Westbury High School has significantly more ELLs at 846 or about 36.08% of student population.
In addition, Austin High School has 34.55% bilingual students, 11.56% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.72% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Westbury High School with 35.01% bilingual students, 12.20% gifted and talented students and 9.68% students in the special education program.
Austin High School's 93 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 12.6 years. Westbury High School's 126 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 12.9 years.
