Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Attucks Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Fonville Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Attucks Middle School’s regular student population is 399 with a 11.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Fonville Middle School is 733 students and a 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Attucks Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 83 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Fonville Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Attucks Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Fonville Middle School’s only distinction designation is in Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Attucks Middle School. They make up for 65.66% of student population, followed by Hispanics (30.83%), Two or More Races (1.75%), Whites or Caucasians (1.00%), Asians (0.25%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
At Fonville Middle School, Hispanics make up 93.18% of student population, followed by African Americans (4.23%), Whites or Caucasians (2.05%), Native Americans (0.41%) and Two or More Races (0.14%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Attucks Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 96.99% compared to 99.59% at Fonville Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Attucks Middle School has 69 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 17.29% of student population. Fonville Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 429 or about 58.53% of student population.
In addition, Attucks Middle School has 16.29% bilingual students, 2.01% are in the gifted and talented program, while 20.55% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Fonville Middle School with 57.30% bilingual students, 5.05% gifted and talented students and 14.46% students in the special education program.
Attucks Middle School's 34 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 4.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.3 years. Teachers at Fonville Middle School, numbering 46 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years.
Of its teaching staff, Attucks Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Fonville Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Attucks Middle School there are 22 female teachers and 12 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Fonville Middle School there are 25 female teachers and 21 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
