Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Arnold Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Kahla Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Arnold Middle School’s regular student population is 1,437 with a 15.3 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Kahla Middle School is 1,301 students and a 14.2 students/teacher ratio.
Arnold Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 89 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Kahla Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 86 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Arnold Middle School bagged all seven distinction awards in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Kahla Middle School’s five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Arnold Middle School. They make up for 43.42% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.59%), African Americans (21.71%), Asians (7.38%), Two or More Races (2.64%) and Native Americans (1.18%).
At Kahla Middle School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 56.42% of student population, followed by African Americans (25.06%), Asians (7.99%), Whites or Caucasians (6.69%), Two or More Races (2.31%) and Native Americans (1.38%).
Based on household incomes, the Arnold Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 65.48% compared to 78.63% at Kahla Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Arnold Middle School has 185 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 12.87% of student population. Kahla Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 241 or about 18.52% of student population.
Arnold Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 11.90%, gifted and talented students, 7.79%, while 11.83% are in the special education program. Kahla Middle School bilingual students comprise 17.06%, gifted and talented students, 4.07%, and 10.61% are in the special education program.
Arnold Middle School's 94 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years. Teachers at Kahla Middle School, numbering 91 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Arnold Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 16 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 37 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Kahla Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 35 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Arnold Middle School there are 75 female teachers and 18 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by 19 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and 14 more working as school support staff.
At Kahla Middle School there are 65 female teachers and 26 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 16 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
