Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Anthony Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Labay Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Anthony Middle School’s regular student population is 1,276 with a 18.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Labay Middle School is 1,235 students and a 15.4 students/teacher ratio.
Anthony Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Anthony Middle School’s only distinction designation is in Science. Labay Middle School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Anthony Middle School. They make up for 29.31% of student population, followed by African Americans (26.18%), Whites or Caucasians (22.18%), Asians (18.10%), Two or More Races (4.00%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
The student population at Labay Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 51.17%, followed by African Americans (23.16%), Whites or Caucasians (15.14%), Asians (6.56%), Two or More Races (2.83%) and Native Americans (1.13%).
Based on household incomes, the Anthony Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 36.52% compared to 69.31% at Labay Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Anthony Middle School has 73 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.72% of student population. Labay Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 196 or about 15.87% of student population.
Anthony Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 4.62%, gifted and talented students, 16.14%, while 7.60% are in the special education program. Labay Middle School bilingual students comprise 14.25%, gifted and talented students, 6.64%, and 13.20% are in the special education program.
Anthony Middle School's 70 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.1 years. Teachers at Labay Middle School, numbering 80 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years.
Of its teaching staff, Anthony Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
