Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Anderson Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING ISD, with Salyers Elementary School, which is a part of SPRING ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Anderson Elementary School has a regular student population of 482 with a 12 students/teacher ratio while Salyers Elementary School has 664 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.1 students/teacher ratio.
Anderson Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 74 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Salyers Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 52 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 80 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Anderson Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Salyers Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Anderson Elementary School. They make up for 56.22% of student population, followed by African Americans (24.27%), Whites or Caucasians (14.94%), Two or More Races (2.90%), Asians (1.04%) and Native Americans (0.41%).
At Salyers Elementary School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 58.89% of student population, followed by Hispanics (31.17%), Two or More Races (4.52%), Whites or Caucasians (2.86%) and Asians (1.96%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Anderson Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 83.40% compared to 90.96% at Salyers Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Anderson Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 26.76% of its student population compared to 17.92% at Salyers Elementary School.
Anderson Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 26.97%, gifted and talented students, 5.19%, while 11.62% are in the special education program. Salyers Elementary School bilingual students comprise 17.17%, gifted and talented students, 2.86%, and 11.30% are in the special education program.
40 teachers employed at Anderson Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years. The 41 teachers at Salyers Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 2.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.8 years.
