Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Anderson Academy, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, with Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Anderson Academy has a regular student population of 655 with a 13.8 students/teacher ratio while Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K has 607 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.6 students/teacher ratio.
Anderson Academy earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 80 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted only 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Anderson Academy and Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Anderson Academy. They make up for 55.42% of student population, followed by Hispanics (38.93%), Two or More Races (3.05%), Whites or Caucasians (1.98%), Native Americans (0.46%) and Asians (0.15%).
At Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K, Hispanics make up 95.22% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (2.80%), African Americans (1.48%) and Asians (0.33%). There is no Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, Anderson Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 93.13% compared to 92.75% at Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Anderson Academy has 169 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 25.80% of student population. Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K has significantly more ELLs at 451 or about 74.30% of student population.
Anderson Academy 7.02% are in the special education program, 0.92% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 25.65% students. Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K has no gifted and talented student, while 11.20% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 72.65% students.
47 teachers employed at Anderson Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.1 years. The 39 teachers at Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K have been serving the school for an average of 10.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Anderson Academy has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Anderson Academy there are 43 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by seven teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
At Hinojosa Ec/Pk/K there are 36 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 30 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
