As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. When we compared Alief Early College High School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Hastings High School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Alief Early College High School’s regular student population is 412 with a student-teacher ratio of 19.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Hastings High School is 3,966 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.7 students/teacher ratio.
Alief Early College High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 98 in student achievement, 97 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 99 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Hastings High School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 68 in student achievement, 72 in school progress, 61 in closing performance gaps and 69 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Alief Early College High School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Hastings High School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Alief Early College High School. They make up for 51.70% of student population, followed by African Americans (25.73%), Asians (16.02%), Whites or Caucasians (4.13%), Two or More Races (1.21%) and Native Americans (0.97%).
At Hastings High School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 58.83% of student population, followed by African Americans (26.88%), Asians (9.33%), Whites or Caucasians (3.35%), Native Americans (0.98%) and Two or More Races (0.48%).
Based on household incomes, Alief Early College High School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 81.31% compared to 76.63% at Hastings High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Alief Early College High School has 16 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.88% of student population. Hastings High School has significantly more ELLs at 1394 or about 35.15% of student population.
Alief Early College High School’s bilingual students comprise 3.88%, gifted and talented students, 20.15%, while 0.49% are in the special education program. Hastings High School bilingual students comprise 33.71%, gifted and talented students, 4.29%, and 8.57% are in the special education program.
Alief Early College High School's 21 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 14.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 16.6 years. Hastings High School's 290 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Alief Early College High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, two teachers have worked for 6-10 years, no teacher serving the school for 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Hastings High School has eight teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 52 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 75 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 65 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 68 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 21 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Alief Early College High School employs 12 female teachers and nine male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one teacher is aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and two more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Hastings High School employs 185 female teachers and 105 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 21 special education teachers are being assisted by 53 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs 16 staff members in the school administration department and 35 more working as school support staff.
