Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Aldine Middle School, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, with Grantham Academy, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Aldine Middle School’s regular student population is 845 with a 12.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Grantham Academy is 1,204 students and a 15.3 students/teacher ratio.
Aldine Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 54 in student achievement, 66 in school progress and 68 in closing performance gaps. It scored 67 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Grantham Academy earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 74 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 73 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Aldine Middle School and Grantham Academy are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Aldine Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 75.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (20.59%), Whites or Caucasians (2.13%), Two or More Races (1.18%) and Asians (0.12%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Grantham Academy, Hispanics make up 91.78% of student population, followed by African Americans (5.65%), Whites or Caucasians (1.66%), Asians (0.42%), Native Americans (0.25%) and Two or More Races (0.25%).
Based on household incomes, the Aldine Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 92.66% compared to 92.94% at Grantham Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Aldine Middle School has 366 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 43.31% of student population. Grantham Academy has significantly more ELLs at 628 or about 52.16% of student population.
In addition, Aldine Middle School has 43.31% bilingual students, 5.56% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.18% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Grantham Academy with 51.58% bilingual students, 5.90% gifted and talented students and 8.72% students in the special education program.
Aldine Middle School's 67 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.8 years. Teachers at Grantham Academy, numbering 78 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Aldine Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 26 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Grantham Academy has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 20 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 13 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Aldine Middle School there are 46 female teachers and 20 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Grantham Academy there are 50 female teachers and 28 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and 11 more working as school support staff.
