Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Oak Springs Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Kiker Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Oak Springs Elementary School has a regular student population of 228 with a 10.5 students/teacher ratio while Kiker Elementary School has 730 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.9 students/teacher ratio.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Oak Springs Elementary School and Kiker Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Oak Springs Elementary School. They make up for 58.77% of student population, followed by African Americans (37.72%), Two or More Races (2.19%) and Whites or Caucasians (1.32%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
At Kiker Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 63.15% of student population, followed by Hispanics (17.53%), Asians (10.41%), Two or More Races (6.71%), African Americans (1.92%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
Based on household incomes, Oak Springs Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 98.25% compared to 6.71% at Kiker Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Oak Springs Elementary School has 35 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 15.35% of student population. Kiker Elementary School has more ELLs at 42 or about 5.75% of student population.
In addition, Oak Springs Elementary School has 15.35% bilingual students, 8.33% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.04% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Kiker Elementary School with 5.75% bilingual students, 12.19% gifted and talented students and 10.41% students in the special education program.
