Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Blackshear Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Blanton Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Blackshear Elementary School has a regular student population of 287 with a 12.3 students/teacher ratio while Blanton Elementary School has 560 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.7 students/teacher ratio.
Blackshear Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 74 in student achievement, 96 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Blanton Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 82 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Blackshear Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth. Blanton Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Blackshear Elementary School. They make up for 43.55% of student population, followed by African Americans (26.13%), Whites or Caucasians (21.60%), Two or More Races (7.32%) and Asians (1.39%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Blanton Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 43.93%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (38.75%), Two or More Races (7.50%), African Americans (6.96%), Asians (1.96%) and Native Americans (0.71%).
Based on household incomes, Blackshear Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 56.45% compared to 45.00% at Blanton Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Blackshear Elementary School has 32 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.15% of student population. Blanton Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 145 or about 25.89% of student population.
Blackshear Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 10.80%, gifted and talented students, 13.94%, while 13.59% are in the special education program. Blanton Elementary School bilingual students comprise 72.86%, gifted and talented students, 8.21%, and 7.68% are in the special education program.
23 teachers employed at Blackshear Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.1 years. The 40 teachers at Blanton Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Blackshear Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Blanton Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Blackshear Elementary School there are 22 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and two more working as school support staff.
At Blanton Elementary School there are 34 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
