Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Wunderlich Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, with Kleb Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wunderlich Intermediate’s regular student population is 1,364 with a 13.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Kleb Intermediate is 1,438 students and a 16.5 students/teacher ratio.
Wunderlich Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 70 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 71 in closing performance gaps. It scored 75 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Kleb Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 83 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Wunderlich Intermediate and Kleb Intermediate are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Wunderlich Intermediate. They make up for 63.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.51%), Asians (7.18%), Whites or Caucasians (3.67%), Two or More Races (2.79%) and Native Americans (0.51%).
The student population at Kleb Intermediate is also predominantly by Hispanics at 37.69%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.24%), African Americans (16.06%), Asians (7.93%), Two or More Races (4.45%) and Native Americans (0.35%).
Based on household incomes, Wunderlich Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 76.98% compared to 50.00% at Kleb Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wunderlich Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 30.43% of its student population compared to 13.42% at Kleb Intermediate.
In addition, Wunderlich Intermediate has 29.62% bilingual students, 4.47% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.83% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Kleb Intermediate with 13.07% bilingual students, 8.28% gifted and talented students and 11.96% students in the special education program.
Wunderlich Intermediate's 104 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years. Teachers at Kleb Intermediate, numbering 86 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wunderlich Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 32 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 12 beginning teachers. Kleb Intermediate has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 33 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 26 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Wunderlich Intermediate there are 79 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has six staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
At Kleb Intermediate there are 62 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
