Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Meyerland Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Fonville Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Meyerland Middle School’s regular student population is 1,141 with a 14.6 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Fonville Middle School is 733 students and a 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Meyerland Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Fonville Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Meyerland Middle School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress. Except for Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Fonville Middle School earned one out of seven distinctions.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Meyerland Middle School. They make up for 56.27% of student population, followed by African Americans (27.43%), Whites or Caucasians (12.88%), Two or More Races (1.75%), Asians (1.49%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
At Fonville Middle School, Hispanics make up 93.18% of student population, followed by African Americans (4.23%), Whites or Caucasians (2.05%), Native Americans (0.41%) and Two or More Races (0.14%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Meyerland Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 69.50% compared to 99.59% at Fonville Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Meyerland Middle School has 296 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 25.94% of student population. Fonville Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 429 or about 58.53% of student population.
Meyerland Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 27.17%, gifted and talented students, 27.87%, while 10.34% are in the special education program. Fonville Middle School bilingual students comprise 57.30%, gifted and talented students, 5.05%, and 14.46% are in the special education program.
Meyerland Middle School's 78 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 11.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.9 years. Teachers at Fonville Middle School, numbering 46 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years.
Of its teaching staff, Meyerland Middle School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 13 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 25 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Fonville Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Meyerland Middle School there are 51 female teachers and 26 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
