Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Gleason Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Andre Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Gleason Elementary School has a regular student population of 908 with a 17.1 students/teacher ratio while Andre Elementary School has 939 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio.
Gleason Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 86 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 90 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Andre Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 77 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. For Gleason Elementary School this is in post-secondary while Andre Elementary School secured one for Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Gleason Elementary School. They make up for 51.21% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (16.52%), Asians (14.21%), African Americans (13.33%), Two or More Races (3.74%) and Native Americans (0.99%).
The student population at Andre Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 42.92%, followed by African Americans (30.14%), Whites or Caucasians (13.10%), Asians (8.63%) and Two or More Races (5.01%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Gleason Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 62.22% compared to 59.21% at Andre Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Gleason Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 29.52% of its student population compared to 24.49% at Andre Elementary School.
Gleason Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 28.52%, gifted and talented students, 4.74%, while 8.70% are in the special education program. Andre Elementary School bilingual students comprise 23.32%, gifted and talented students, 2.34%, and 13.31% are in the special education program.
53 teachers employed at Gleason Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.4 years. The 63 teachers at Andre Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Gleason Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Andre Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Gleason Elementary School there are 51 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
At Andre Elementary School there are 62 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 22 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
