As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Guyer High School, which is a part of DENTON ISD, with Ryan High School, which is a part of DENTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Guyer High School’s regular student population is 2,614 with a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Ryan High School is 2,210 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.9 students/teacher ratio.
Guyer High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 81 in school progress and 89 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Ryan High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 83 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Guyer High School earned one out of seven distinctions. Ryan High School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Guyer High School. They make up for 55.05% of student population, followed by Hispanics (28.12%), African Americans (8.34%), Asians (4.36%), Two or More Races (3.29%) and Native Americans (0.69%).
The student population at Ryan High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 43.30%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (30.59%), African Americans (20.27%), Two or More Races (2.40%), Asians (2.22%) and Native Americans (0.90%).
Based on household incomes, the Guyer High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 24.45% compared to 61.86% at Ryan High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Guyer High School has 223 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 8.53% of student population. Ryan High School has significantly more ELLs at 452 or about 20.45% of student population.
Guyer High School’s bilingual students comprise 8.42%, gifted and talented students, 14.50%, while 8.49% are in the special education program. Ryan High School bilingual students comprise 20.36%, gifted and talented students, 12.04%, and 13.17% are in the special education program.
Guyer High School's 176 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 12.4 years. Ryan High School's 159 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 12.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Guyer High School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 36 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 59 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 40 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 27 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 12 beginning teachers. Ryan High School has eight teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 30 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 53 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 39 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 22 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Guyer High School employs 101 female teachers and 74 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 23 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Ryan High School employs 86 female teachers and 73 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 18 more working as school support staff.
