Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Houston Middle School, which is a part of IRVING ISD, with Travis Middle School, which is a part of IRVING ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Houston Middle School’s regular student population is 928 with a 14.3 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Travis Middle School is 991 students and a 13.9 students/teacher ratio.
Houston Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 69 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 78 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Travis Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 83 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Houston Middle School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science and post-secondary. Travis Middle School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Houston Middle School. They make up for 45.91% of student population, followed by African Americans (39.66%), Whites or Caucasians (6.14%), Asians (4.74%), Two or More Races (2.05%) and Native Americans (1.51%).
At Travis Middle School, Hispanics make up 68.62% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.13%), Whites or Caucasians (11.30%), Asians (2.02%), Two or More Races (2.02%) and Native Americans (1.51%).
Based on household incomes, Houston Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 93.32% compared to 84.06% at Travis Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Houston Middle School has 310 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 33.41% of student population. Travis Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 426 or about 42.99% of student population.
In addition, Houston Middle School has 36.10% bilingual students, 13.79% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.70% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Travis Middle School with 56.61% bilingual students, 22.00% gifted and talented students and 7.67% students in the special education program.
Houston Middle School's 64 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 3.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8 years. Teachers at Travis Middle School, numbering 71 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years.
Of its teaching staff, Houston Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 13 beginning teachers. In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Houston Middle School there are 46 female teachers and 18 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
