Pinehurst - venue for the US Open 2014

Pinehurst, North Carolina, for all the non-golfers among you, is the self-proclaimed home of golf in America (their St Andrews) and it really is a veritable oasis for golfers. I was told there were 45 courses just in the local area, 9 of which belong to the Pinehust resort itself, named, thankfully, from No.s 1 to 9. It plays host to the US Open this coming week (on Pinehurst No.2) where stars like McIlroy, Mickleson and McDowell (more unashamed alliteration, oops did it again!) will be playing. The greens are rock hard, smooth as silk and shaped like upturned bowls - all of which makes it almost impossible to land a ball without it running off. (At this point I can already hear my mother saying, in a suitably sarcastic tone, "how fascinating")

Payne Stewart (sadly no longer with us) was the last Open winner when it was held at Pinehurst in 1999 and when he'd finally won he made this triumphant pose, now immortalised in bronze behind the 18th green. I thought I made a reasonable attempt to copy it in front of the Carolina Hotel, where I had also managed triumphantly to drink all three varieties of "Open Cocktails" in the Ryder Cup bar - and no, I didn't fall over.

Of course the football (soccer) World Cup also starts on Thursday (which bright spark planned that?) so my photo should have the caption "Go England!". (My apologies to all non sports fans who would have found all this really boring. Better luck next week!)
