Huricane Season is Here - Are You Ready?
Hurricane season is here and we need to get prepared. If you are new to the Houston area, you should make preparations for Hurricane Season which started June 1st and will go through November 30th. You may think that because you live in Cypress, Spring or other areas in North or NW Houston, you will have a low chance of a hurricane passing through since these areas are quite a distance away from the coast. However, after experiencing Hurricane Ike in September 2008, we know that there are still reasons to be concerned. These areas may not be in the center of the hurricane, but could feel its effects from the heavy rains that could cause flooding, and high winds that could cause power outages and cause damage to homes. The Houston Office of Emergency Management recommends preparing an emergency kit stocked with the following items. Enough non-perishable food and bottled water for you and everyone in your family, for at least 5 days, First Aid supplies and all prescription and non-prescription medications for at least one week, Clothing & bedding, Rain gear, Disposable dishes and utensils, Battery operated radio and extra batteries for at least 5 days, Flashlights with extra batteries, Enough cash or traveler’s checks to get you through at least 5 days, Tool kit, sanitation items, Your Homeowners insurance contact information with policy number, and a Battery operated cell phone charger.
