ADL Again Recognizes Sugar Land as Community of Respect

Sugar Land, TX - Once again, the City of Sugar Land is recognized as a “Community of Respect” by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The City has been a recipient of this award since the program began in 2007.

The ADL formally presented the award to Sugar Land at the City Council meeting on March 4. The “Community of Respect” program is an initiative to help governments, non-profit organizations, faith institutions, businesses and institutes of higher learning create an atmosphere that rejects prejudice and fosters respect and an appreciation for diversity.

Sugar Land achieved the recognition for 2013 by fulfilling the following activities:

  • Community members convened to broadly discuss the changing demographics in Sugar Land on June 25, 2013. A special meeting of the City Council Land Use Task Force and the City Manager’s Multicultural Advisory Team was held at City Hall to review the latest research from the Kinder Institute and discuss the City’s response and proactive inclusion of the data in future planning.
  • The City of Sugar Land was a sponsor of the Fort Bend Education Foundation’s International Festival and hosted a booth with an interactive map where attendees could pin their hometown. In addition to the Employee Multicultural Task Force volunteers, personnel from the Police Department were in attendance to further share about City efforts underway.
  • Sugar Land Today, the City’s newsletter, continues to feature the “Know Your Neighbor” Column. Past issues have showcased multicultural holidays like Chinese New Year, Ramadan, Eid Al-Fitr, and Mid-Autumn Festival. The City Manager’s Multicultural Advisory Team and the Employee Multicultural Task Force both contribute to this column.

“The City of Sugar Land is proud to have received this award seven years in a row for our continued commitment to promote, respect and celebrate each of our multicultural communities,” said City Manager Allen Bogard.
