The City of West U first passed a Tree Ordinance in 1992 and was updated in 2004 and again seeks revisions. Currently every development permit in West u is required to include a tree survey. If trees are removed, the owner must pay for replacement trees and that is where the proposed amendments come in:
-Replacement trees can be Class I (Live Oak, Laurel Oak, Cedar Elm, Drummond Red Maple, Loblolly Pine) or Class II (White Ash, Pecan, Black Walnut, Sweetgum, Redbud).
-No more than 30% of the replacement trees of the replacement trees can belong to one genus.
-The replacement tree must be planted in an area that measures at least 200 square feet with no dimension less than 10 feet; be able to absorb at least 3 inches of water per our; contain no paved or solid material.

West U claims to protect it's "urban forest" while residents continue to keep track of the growing list of rules.
