Multigenerational living is the "new black" in real estate. Pew Research states that one in five homes in the US is multigenerational. A parent with a child living at home, an aging parent living with adult children, sometimes a combination of three generations living together. All in all there are 64 million Americans living in multi-gen. New builders like Lennar Homes are cashing in on this major market trend by building new houses with separate but accessible separate quarters including separate living areas, bedrooms, baths and kitchens or kitchenettes. My wife, Tracy, a licensed interior designer, immediately saw potential in this small house we found in Coldspring, Texas in the gated community of Cape Royale on Lake Livingston. A garage and storage area comprised almost half of the square footage of the property. Tracy designed and completed the modifications by adding a completely separate living quarters in the old garage and storage area. Separated from the main portion of the house by a sliding barn door, it provides a comfortable and spacious living area for an aging parent, a special needs adult, a child living at home or even a guest quarters.
