He is Leaving for College,

by Elly Mead

My “middle” left yesterday for his second year away at college. I realized as he drove away, it had taken more time for me to sort and match his socks than it had taken to load all his worldly goods into his truck.  I believe my daughter takes more to a weekend of softball…

As he pulled away, in my head, I am going over the list of things I sent that he did not need: New Leather shoes “Mom, Michelle (his girlfriend) is just being dramatic.  They do not smell that bad.”  New tennis shoes-“Mom, I don’t need new tennis shoes, the duct tape is cool.” New sheets he was happy with the old ones. “The pills are kinda like my own private loofah” he said.

Even with all the commentary, for those 10 minutes he was happy to let me mother him. I witnessed limited eye rolling and heard very few deep breaths. I got the best hug ever, right before he drove off with a grin and a wave. He was distracted by a 9 hour drive that was ahead of him, and I was off to show property.

Five hours later I got a call.  Hey Mom, Thanks, I love you.”

It was worth it.
