Political Activities

March 21  
The Governmental Affairs Department and the City of Houston hosted the second Realtor® Homebuyer Assistance Program Education Workshop at the Third Ward Multi-Service Center, 3611 Ennis Street. 78 HAR members attended.
                                   
March 26
I attended TAR’s Lobby Day Orientation in Austin along with TREPAC Chair Vicki Fullerton and TREPAC Trustees Rochelle Barrow, Billy Burt, Becky Hill, Chaille Ralph, Ray Walker, and Ed Wolff.  

March 27
Realtor® Lobby Day in Austin.  HAR members were well represented by approximately seventy-five of their fellow Realtor® and affiliate members at the State Capitol for the biennial Realtor® Lobby Day in Austin. Leading the HAR citizen lobby team were HAR Chair Rob Cook, Vice Chairs Vicki Fullerton and Margie Dorrance, and Immediate Past Chair Lorraine Abercrombie.  Directors participating in the legislative visits included John Nugent, Billy Hartman, Mario Arriaga, Judi Barr, Kenneth Li, and Patrick Luby.  Playing important roles in political fundraising and Lobby Day were TREPAC Trustees, HAR Director Chaille Ralph, Rochelle Barrow, Billy Burt, Ray Walker, Becky Hill, and Ed Wolff.  Ray Holtzapple, 2007 Political Affairs Advisory Group Chair, also led contact teams during the legislative visits.

State Contact Team Members were transported in three luxury buses from Houston to Austin and received issue briefings in print and video while in route to prepare them for one-on-one visits with their state legislators.

Over the course of the day, HAR’s lobby team met with eight senators and thirty-three state representatives from the Greater Houston area.

April 2
Congressman Gene Green held his annual golf tournament at Hermann Park and his Federal Political Coordinator, Carlos Garcia, and I attended.  Carlos will present Congressman Green with a $1,000 RPAC contribution.

April 10
Ray Holtzapple, Darryl Malloy, and I attended Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee’s fundraising luncheon at the Hyatt Regency.

Upcoming Events

April 12 
In preparation for our May congressional visits, a Federal Political Contact Team working lunch and legislative update will be held with NAR’s new Field Representative, Michael Rendina, and Managing Director of Political Field Operations, John Ferruggiaro, in the HAR Board Room from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

April 25
A working lunch is being planned to introduce Dr. Mary Spangler, new Chancellor of Houston Community College, to HAR’s leadership.  HAR Directors will be invited to attend.

April 30
First day of early voting for all municipalities. Please see HAR’s Governmental Affairs Department website and upcoming election newsletter for polling locations and ballot information.

May 16 and 17
Congressional visits in Washington, D. C.   The Texas briefing will be held on Wednesday, May 16, from 9:30-10:30.  The location has not been determined.

May 17
A Congressional breakfast with HAR’s nine Members of Congress and HAR’s leadership is planned for 8:00 a.m. at Tortilla Coast.
