Are you planning to update your home? When planning home improvements consider budgeting for some of these items to give you the greatest energy savings.

1. Replace an old air conditioner with a high efficiency unit to save you up to 40% in energy cost. Install the unit in a shaded area to consume up to 5% less energy.

2. Seal leaks in ductwork in your attic to save you up to 25%.

3. Add attic insulation to an R-30 value to save you up to 30%. An average 15-year old home has between an R-11 to R-15 value.

4. Install solar screens on windows that are exposed to direct sunlight.

5. Replace old, drafty windows with energy-efficient ones to lower household energy bills by 7% to 15%. If window replacement is not possible be sure to repair and seal air leaks for energy savings.

6. Install a programmable thermostat to lower utility bills, and to manage your heating and cooling systems efficiently.
