The Grand Canyon

In a country that is so vast and has so many amazing and different natural landscapes, I guess it's no surprise that they ran out of superlatives when naming them. When it came to the Grand Canyon, presumably they had already found an Enormous Crevasse, a Magnificent Trench and a Gigantic Valley. Now, as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, we are left with the rather understated Grand Canyon.

'Just' a 250 mile, 5 hour drive from Las Vegas (or a 45 minute helicopter ride for the money rich and/or time poor) the Grand Canyon is truly a most spectacular sight. The scale of it is completely overwhelming. Every minute that you look at it, every step you take around and down it and every view, height and angle that you look at it from and at ... it really, truly is completely, incredibly and unbelievably 'grand' in it's scale. Even I started to run out of superlatives while spending 24 hours staring out across this beautiful, barren, and breathtaking valley. It's ginormous ...

Here's just one of a hundred photos that I took ... with the Colorado River in view.

So the lesson learned is to beware the understated in the US - the Rockies, the Great Lakes, the Grand Canyon, the Big Mac. They're gonna be a lot bigger than they sound.
