Iced Tea

Houstonians are in general a very charitable and giving bunch. In part, it's because they have to be. The State just doesn't control, participate in or contribute to many things that in the UK we rather take for granted. The UK is a far more socialist (not necessarily more sociable) country in that regard. So private enterprise, donations and charities have to fill in where the State otherwise fails to deliver and this extends through to many areas, from parks and public media, to hospitals and medical research. Mind you, given the condition of the roads here which the State is meant to be in charge of, it's probably a good thing that they are given as little to do as possible!

October marks a whole month of breast cancer awareness throughout the US, a disease that still kills 40,000 women every year in the US alone. However, at a recent event (today in fact), to raise funds for a particular breast cancer charity (the Nancy Owens Memorial) I was reminded of one thing that I have yet to enjoy about living in Houston and very much doubt that I ever will. Every fundraising event or awards ceremony that I have been to seems to provide unlimited supplies of it, indeed many establishments do too, often for free. It seems to be a ubiquitous and accepted part of life in Houston, and indeed across much of the US too where it is always readily available to be handed out at a moments notice. And what's worse, people here seem to genuinely like and enjoy it. It certainly seems on the outside to be nice, but it's just a disguise for something that for me I avoid at all times and at every occasion.

I am of course talking about none other than ….

Iced Tea!
