38 New Reasons to Love Houston

As I was standing in line at my closest HEB waiting to pay, I picked up the latest issue of Houstonia.  If you haven't had a chance to pick one up and look through it--especially this month--you'll be missing a great article about the best new restaurants in Houston for 2014.

Most magazines have this sort of issue and I always look forward to it.  I remember when I lived in Los Angeles and waited for the Best of LA issue of Los Angeles magazine to be published.  I would keep it handy for a year so that I could refer back to it for ideas, especially special occasions.  So I was very excited when I read the cover of Houstonia this month "38 Best New Restaurants".  The article is thorough and very descriptive about lots of new culinary options for Houstonians.

Texas has a rap (outside of Texas) for being all about brisket, ribs tex-mex, chicken fried steak and basically fried everything (pickles, okra, jalapeños…)  If only this issue of Houstonia could get more media coverage it could go a long way towards changing our image.

The reality is that there are over 90 languages spoken in H-Town.  There are more than 8,000 restaurants in the Houston area with culinary choices that represent more than 35 countries and American regions.

The good news for all these new restaurants is that Houstonians dine out more than residents of any other city—4.1 times per week, compared with the national average of 3.1.  And contrary to the image of Houston being all about BBQ, UrbanSpoon.com, in June 2014, listed 392 vegan friendly restaurants, 38 farm to table restaurants and 215 food trucks in Houston.

I have already made a short list of restaurants I want my family to try in the next few weeks.  By the way, that short list has 11 restaurants on it!  We have some amazing new Japanese, Thai, Korean, Peruvian, Latin American and good ole American restaurants in Houston.  As chain restaurants pop up every mile along the Houston freeways, I say support local businesses!  The restaurants I read about are taking risks by being creative with food, using locally grown produce, mixing flavors from different regions and cultures and that sounds just like this great city.

There are lots more than 38 reasons to love Houston, but this list of new restaurants is a good starting point.
